The results of the first round of presidential elections have ended the controversy over the future of the Coalition. The coalition that managed, with great successes and mistakes, but also with the transition to democracy is the brink of extinction, a victim of its inability to renew itself and the desire of its leaders to perpetuate the institutions of power.
elections Dec. 13 marked the advent of a new scenario that demands responsible action, bold and immediate action to achieve a consensus among the progressive forces, to prevent Chile from falling into the hands of vengeful conservatism, custom Sebastián Piñera.
Hence the extreme urgency of creating a broad new progressive reference, including the remainder of the coalition, the Communist Party and the sectors that support Marco Enríquez-Ominami,
But for this, political leaders that led to its stagnation of the current situation must assume their responsibilities and leave their positions and now, without delay. Is profoundly mistaken as an argument those who wield the "lesser evil" as an instrument for capturing the progressive vote of 27 percent of Chileans who supported Marco Enríquez-Ominami and Jorge Arrate for the candidacy of Eduardo Frei.
The sum of wills and efforts to move the country forward on the path of progress even, demand changes now, because since the gestures are not enough. We must demonstrate to the public with facts, not words, that their voice is heard and take on new forms of politics, with transparency and inclusiveness, relegating to the past the secrecy of the elite, more concerned with their own conservation project which they claim to represent.
The challenge for progressives today is to charge as soon as a new consensus that allows to reformulate the electoral campaign program on new bases, new ideas, new forces and new people. Time there, but very little. What is lacking is courage and determination.
